Human skeleton

The human skeleton is the rigid internal framework of bones, cartilage, and connective tissue that supports the body, enables movement, and protects vital organs. In adults, it comprises approximately 206 bones, though infants are born with around 270—many of which fuse together over time.

The skeleton serves three essential functions: it acts as a structural scaffold for muscles and organs; it produces blood cells within bone marrow; and it stores crucial minerals like calcium and phosphorus. The skeleton's architecture reflects millions of years of evolution, optimized for bipedal locomotion and manual dexterity.

Major divisions include the axial skeleton—the skull, spine, and ribs—and the appendicular skeleton, which comprises the limbs and the girdles that attach them. Bones are living tissues constantly remodeled through metabolism, while cartilage provides flexible shock absorption at joints.

Skeletal health is central to public health, influenced by nutrition, exercise, and age. Conditions like osteoporosis and fractures can profoundly affect mobility and independence. Modern imaging technologies like X-rays and CT scans allow detailed visualization of skeletal structure and pathology.

Understanding the skeleton connects to broader fields: anatomy, biomechanics, paleoanthropology, and forensic science all rely on skeletal knowledge.
