Living organisms
A living organism is any individual entity that exhibits the fundamental properties of life: metabolic activity, growth, reproduction, response to environment, and organization of matter. Living organisms range from single-celled bacteria to complex multicellular creatures, and they inhabit nearly every environment on Earth—from the Himalayas to deep ocean trenches.
Life organizes itself across multiple scales. At the smallest, subatomic particles and atomic structures form molecules like proteins and DNA. These build Cells, the fundamental units of life, which combine into tissues, organs, and complete organisms. Every living thing participates in the Food Chain, exchanging energy and matter with its surroundings.
Organisms interact through ecological relationships and neural or chemical signaling systems. Some, like plants, capture solar energy directly through photosynthesis. Others consume other organisms for energy. All eventually die, returning their matter to the environment in an endless cycle.
