Monoculture farming is the agricultural practice of growing a single crop species repeatedly on the same field, season after season. This industrial approach maximizes yield and mechanization efficiency but carries significant ecological costs.
Developed extensively during the 20th century, monoculture dominates global agriculture today. A farmer might plant corn across 500 acres for decades, or dedicate vast tracts to wheat or soybeans. The strategy simplifies harvesting, reduces labor diversity, and scales predictably for profit.

Pest populations explode without natural predators—specialized insects feast unimpeded. Disease spreads rapidly through genetically identical plants. Modern monoculture depends on synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and intensive Interconnection with global markets. This contrasts sharply with traditional crop rotation and polyculture systems, which maintain soil health and ecological balance.
Many farmers and researchers now explore alternatives—mixed cropping, intercropping, and regenerative methods—seeking productivity without ecological exhaustion.
