Naming conventions
Naming conventions are systematic rules or patterns for assigning names to entities within a defined domain. They emerge across disciplines—from Software Architecture to Sociology to chemistry—as communities solve the practical problem of consistency, clarity, and discoverability.
In Software Architecture, conventions govern how variables, functions, and classes are labeled (camelCase, snake_case, PascalCase). Scientists use them to classify ions, molecular structures, and specimens. Taxonomists apply methodical hierarchies. Historians adopt chronological frameworks. Even informal communities—from online forums to trades—develop naming patterns that signal belonging and facilitate communication.
Good conventions balance several goals: they should be memorable, machine-readable, searchable, and culturally appropriate. They reduce cognitive load, prevent collisions, and encode information. Yet rigid conventions can stifle creativity; the best ones evolve with their communities.
