Standardization
Standardization is the process of establishing uniform protocols, measurements, or specifications so that different systems, products, or practices can work together reliably. It transforms variety into Coherence, enabling compatibility across borders, industries, and time.
From Integrated circuits to Food science, standardization solves a fundamental problem: without agreed-upon rules, each actor operates in isolation. Yet standardization carries hidden costs. It can ossify Inherited wisdom, enforce dominant perspectives over local knowledge, and flatten beneficial diversity. Decolonization movements often critique standards imposed by colonial powers. In Qualitative research, over-standardization may erase the nuance that makes findings meaningful.
The deepest tension: standardization seeks Balance—enough uniformity to enable cooperation, enough flexibility to permit innovation. Too rigid, it stifles; too loose, it fragments.
