Neuron
A neuron is a specialized cell that transmits electrical and chemical signals throughout the nervous system. Found in brains, spinal cords, and peripheral nerves across the animal kingdom, neurons are the fundamental units of thought, sensation, and movement.
Each neuron consists of a cell body (soma), branching dendrites that receive signals, and a long axon that transmits them. When stimulated, neurons fire—generating electrical impulses that travel along the axon and release neurotransmitters at synapses, the junctions where neurons communicate with each other or with muscles and glands.
This electrochemical signaling enables everything from reflexes to conscious experience. Neurons vary dramatically in shape and function: some detect light or sound, others process dimensions of thought, still others command movement. Damage to neurons—through injury, disease, or degeneration—can profoundly affect behavior and cognition, making their study essential to medicine and neuroscience.
Modern imaging techniques like electron microscopy have revealed the neuron's intricate architecture, while empirical research continues to uncover how trillions of neurons coordinate to produce consciousness itself.
