Ocean pollution manifests through multiple pathways: industrial discharge and chemical runoff poison coastal waters; Plastic pollution fragments into microparticles that enter food chains; oil spills coat surfaces and suffocate organisms; nutrient overload triggers dead zones where cause-and-effect cascades eliminate oxygen; heavy metals accumulate in sediments and organisms; and noise from shipping disrupts marine communication and navigation.
The problem spans scales from localized harbors to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—a rotating mass of plastic debris larger than some nations. Sources are equally diverse: agricultural runoff, industrial waste, fishing gear, urban sewage, and atmospheric deposition.
Consequences ripple through ecological models: coral bleaching, fish population collapse, and threatened food security for billions dependent on marine protein. Bioaccumulation concentrates toxins in apex predators, including humans.
Solutions demand systemic change: stronger regulations, Circular economy design, plastic alternatives, cleanup initiatives, and international cooperation through treaties like the Convention on Biological Diversity.
