Pascal (unit)
The pascal (symbol: Pa) is the SI unit of pressure and stress. One pascal equals one newton per square meter, or equivalently one joule per cubic meter. It's an exceptionally small unit in everyday terms—atmospheric pressure at sea level is about 101,325 pascals—which is why kilopascals (kPa) and megapascals (MPa) are common in practical applications.
Named after the French polymath Blaise Pascal, who made pioneering discoveries in fluid mechanics and Barometry, the unit emerged from the metric system's rationalization in the 1970s. Engineers use pascals to describe everything from tire pressure and material durability to wind load calculations and fluid flow.
The pascal's elegance lies in its relationship to energy: pressure multiplied by volume yields joules of work.
