Radius (astronomy)
In astronomy, radius refers to the distance from the center of a celestial object to its surface. This fundamental measurement applies across cosmic scales—from atoms in stellar atmospheres to entire galaxies.
For stars, radius indicates size and relates directly to Luminosity, Temperature, and evolutionary stage. Our Sun's radius (about 696,000 kilometers) serves as a standard unit called the solar radius, used to compare other stars. Massive stars can exceed 1,000 solar radii, while white dwarfs compress stellar mass into Earth-sized objects.
Planetary radii help define planetary types: terrestrial worlds like Earth are small and dense, while gas giants sprawl across vast distances.
