Stratigraphic
Stratigraphic means relating to Stratigraphy, the study of rock and sediment layers and their properties, sequences, and histories. The term describes anything pertaining to the arrangement, composition, or analysis of strata—the distinct bands of material that accumulate over time in the Earth's crust.
Stratigraphic methods reveal Earth's timeline. By examining layer by layer, scientists decode ancient environments, track Impact events, date fossils, and understand how continents shifted. A stratigraphic column is a vertical diagram showing the order and characteristics of strata at a location. Stratigraphic correlation connects layers across regions, building a coherent history of vast areas.
The approach extends beyond geology: stratigraphic thinking—analyzing change through ordered sequences—appears in Archaeology, where artifact layers reveal cultural chronology, and even in understanding the Anthropocene through environmental deposits.
Stratigraphic analysis depends on key principles: superposition (younger layers sit atop older ones), original horizontality (layers form flat), and lateral continuity (layers extend across space until they thin out or pinch off). These foundational ideas, refined since the 1600s, remain indispensable for reading Earth's archives and reconstructing deep time.
