Upper arm bone
The upper arm bone, or humerus, is the single long bone extending from the shoulder to the elbow in humans and other vertebrates. It's a remarkable structure that bridges two of the body's most mobile joints.
The humerus features a rounded head that fits into the shoulder socket, allowing wide movement in multiple directions. Along its shaft run grooves and ridges where muscles and nerves attach, making it a crucial anchor point for the arm's complex system of levers. At its lower end, it forms the elbow joint with the radius and ulna, bones of the forearm.
As with all bones, the humerus is a living tissue, constantly remodeling itself through microscopic fractures and repairs. Its density and strength reflect the demands placed upon it—athletes often develop subtle structural changes from repeated strain. Fractures of the humerus range from minor hairline cracks to severe breaks requiring surgical repair.
