Water Density

Water density is the mass of water per unit volume, typically measured in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³) or kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³). At standard conditions, pure water has a density of approximately 1.0 g/cm³—a convenient benchmark that anchors much of Chemistry and Physics.

What makes water peculiar is its anomalous density behavior. Unlike most substances, water becomes less dense as it freezes, which is why ice floats. This counterintuitive property emerges from Hydrogen bonding: as temperature drops toward freezing, water molecules arrange into a crystalline lattice with more space between them than in the liquid state. This irregularity is crucial to ecological survival—ice forming on lake surfaces insulates life below from deadly cold.

Density also varies with temperature and salinity. Warm water is less dense than cold water, driving Ocean Currents. Seawater's higher density (about 1.03 g/cm³) due to dissolved salts creates stratification in marine Ecosystem stability, affecting Marine Ecology.
