Dependent variable
A dependent variable is the outcome or result being measured or observed in an experiment or study. It's called "dependent" because its value is thought to depend on changes in other variables—specifically, the independent variables that researchers manipulate or control.
In a scientific plot, the dependent variable typically appears on the vertical (y) axis. For example, if you're testing how temperature affects plant growth, growth is your dependent variable. In trigonometric relationships, the output function depends on input angles. In neuroscience, neural activity might be the dependent variable when studying how genes influence behavior.
The concept extends beyond laboratory science into economics (where sales might depend on advertising spend), sports analytics (where performance depends on training), and agriculture (where crop yield depends on rainfall and soil quality).
Identifying your dependent variable clearly is crucial for valid statistical inference. Confusing which variable depends on which can lead to backward conclusions and fundamental bias in reasoning. Good experimental design isolates the dependent variable from confounding factors.
