Forces (physics)
A force is a push or pull that causes an object to accelerate, deform, or change its state of motion. Fundamental to understanding how the universe works, forces are the mechanism by which causes produce physical effects—from the motion of planets to the elementary particles inside atoms.
Newton's groundbreaking insight, formalized in Newton's laws, showed that force equals mass times acceleration (F=ma). This framework unified terrestrial and celestial mechanics, explaining everything from falling apples to orbiting moons.
Modern physics reveals deeper layers. Electromagnetism and the Higgs mechanism show how forces arise from fundamental interactions. Quantum mechanics reveals that forces operate through the exchange of particles, while General relativity reveals that gravity itself is the curvature of spacetime.
Forces come in varieties: contact forces (friction, normal force), action-at-a-distance forces (gravity, electromagnetism), and nuclear forces binding atomic nuclei. Understanding forces requires mathematical modeling, experimental verification, and sometimes physical intuition—recognizing patterns in how the world responds to pushes and pulls.
