Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution was a transformative period of human history—roughly 1760–1840—when societies shifted from agrarian, handcraft economies to machine-based manufacturing and factory systems. Beginning in Britain, it spread across Europe and North America, fundamentally reshaping how goods were produced, how people worked, and how cities grew.

The era introduced steam engines, Textile machinery, and iron production at unprecedented scales. Newtonian physics and new optimization of production processes enabled factories to replace cottage industries. People migrated from rural areas to cities, creating urban centers powered by labor and ambition—though often at the cost of grueling working conditions and atmospheric pollution.

The consequences rippled across society: Capital accumulated in new hands, technologies accelerated, and global trade networks intensified. Social hierarchies shifted; a wealthy merchant class rose alongside industrial workers. The revolution also sowed seeds of modern environmentalism, as temperatures rose in industrial cities and rivers choked with dense waste.

This period wasn't a sudden explosion but a cascade of innovations, from the textile mills of Lancashire to the coal mines feeding insatiable furnaces. It laid the groundwork for the modern world—for better and worse.
