Ocean ecosystems
Ocean ecosystems are the interconnected communities of marine organisms and their physical environment, spanning from sunlit Tide pools to the crushing depths of the abyssal plain. They represent Earth's largest biomes, covering more than 70% of the planet and driving global cycles of oxygen, carbon, and nutrients.
These systems are powered by sunlight and tidal energy, supporting everything from microscopic larval plankton to Sea Turtles and whales. Herbivores like sea urchins and fish graze on kelp forests and algae, while predators maintain balance. Gravitational forces from the Moon create tides that reshape habitats daily.
Ocean ecosystems face mounting pressures: warming waters alter species distributions, acidification weakens shells, and overfishing collapses food webs. Yet they remain astonishingly resilient and generative—coral reefs rival rainforests in biodiversity, and hydrothermal vents host life thriving on chemicals alone, reshaping our understanding of where life can flourish.
