Organic matter
Organic matter consists of compounds built from carbon atoms, typically bonded with hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and other elements. It forms the chemical foundation of all known life on Earth—from the proteins in your cells to the fossil fuels beneath the ground.
The term spans living and dead material alike. A fallen leaf, a piece of coal, the methane in a cow's gut, the humus darkening forest soil—all are organic matter. What unites them is their carbon skeleton, a consequence of chemistry that favors carbon's ability to form four stable bonds.
Organic matter cycles endlessly through Ecosystems. Plants capture Energy from sunlight to build it. Animals consume plants (or other animals) to harvest that stored energy. When organisms die, decomposers break organic matter down, returning nutrients to soil and atmosphere. This cycle is central to Biogeochemistry.
In human contexts, organic matter carries weight too: it determines Soil fertility for Agriculture, powers Climate systems through carbon pathways, and underpins debates about Sustainability. Understanding how organic matter moves—through sediments, through water, through air—is essential to understanding planetary change.
