Quarks
Quarks are the most fundamental constituents of matter known to physics, and among the most elusive particles ever discovered. These tiny fragments cannot exist in isolation—they're forever bound together by the strong strong nuclear force, which grows stronger the farther apart you try to push them. This bizarre behavior is called "color confinement."
There are six types, or "flavors," of quarks: up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom. The everyday universe relies almost entirely on just two: up and down quarks combine in groups of three to form protons and neutrons, which in turn build all atoms. The heavier flavors exist only fleetingly in high-energy environments like the early cosmos or particle accelerators such as CERN's Large Hadron Collider.
Each quark carries fractional electric charge and a mysterious property called "color" (red, green, or blue)—nothing to do with actual hues, but essential to the theory's internal coherence. Their discovery in the 1960s, theorized by Gell-Mann and Zweig, revealed that matter itself has a deeper architecture. Today, quarks remain central to understanding why the universe exists at all.
