Mycorrhizal networks
Mycorrhizal networks are symbiotic associations between plants and fungi that form underground webs of connection. Fungal filaments colonize plant roots, extending far into the soil and dramatically expanding the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. In return, plants provide the fungi with Carbohydrates produced through photosynthesis.
These networks operate at scales from individual root-tip associations to forest-wide "wood wide webs"—vast interconnected systems linking hundreds of trees. Recent research suggests that through these fungal highways, plants may transfer resources, chemical signals, and defense compounds to neighbors, creating a form of underground communication. A mother tree can apparently support struggling seedlings; infected plants may warn healthy ones of incoming pests.
The phenomenon has fascinated ecologists and inspired philosophical reflection on plant agency and ecosystem interdependence. While some claims about plant intention remain debated in the scientific community, the basic biology is revolutionary: forests are not collections of competing individuals but integrated chemical and biological systems.
Mycorrhizal networks are especially critical in nutrient-poor climates and appear fundamental to terrestrial ecology.
