Satellite
A satellite is any object in orbit around a larger celestial body, bound by gravitational attraction. The term encompasses both natural satellites—like Earth's Moon—and artificial satellites launched by humans into space.
Natural satellites formed alongside their parent bodies billions of years ago. Earth's Moon, for instance, likely resulted from a giant collision early in our planetary system's history. Other planets host dozens or hundreds of moons, each with unique geology and potential for discovery.
Artificial satellites, first launched in 1957, revolutionized human civilization. Today thousands orbit Earth, serving communications, scientific research, Weather, navigation, and remote sensing. Satellites transmit data about Ocean currents, Atmospheric conditions, and soil properties, enabling better farming practices and climate monitoring. The Global Positioning System relies entirely on satellite networks.
Satellites orbit in various patterns: geostationary satellites hover over one spot; polar-orbiting ones circle Earth's poles; and deep-space probes journey toward distant planets. Each orbit requires precise calculations balancing velocity against gravitational pull—too slow and the satellite falls, too fast and it escapes.
Beyond practical applications, satellites embody human curiosity about the cosmos and our place within it.
