Soil composition
Soil composition refers to the mixture of minerals, organic matter, water, and air that forms the living skin of the earth. Understanding what soil contains is foundational to agriculture, ecosystems, and land management.
Healthy soil typically consists of about 45% minerals (sand, silt, and clay), 5% organic matter (decomposed organisms and plant material), and 50% pore space filled with water and air. The mineral fraction—determined by particle size—strongly influences drainage, nutrient availability, and workability. Clay holds moisture and nutrients but can become waterlogged; sand drains quickly but retains little; silt offers a middle ground.
Organic matter is the magic ingredient: it improves soil structure, feeds microorganisms, sequesters carbon, and enhances fertility. The proportion of each component varies dramatically by location and history, shaped by parent material, climate, organism activity, topography, and time on the geological timescale.
Soil composition determines what plants thrive, how much water Ecosystems can retain, and even the atmosphere of a place. Urbanization and erosion continually alter these delicate balances, making soil science essential for sustainable natural and human futures.
