Prediction
Prediction is an act of stating what will happen in the future, based on available evidence, patterns, or reasoning. Humans and machines alike make predictions by analyzing Historical events, identifying patterns, and applying Logic (mathematics) or domain expertise—though the reliability varies enormously depending on the domain and the predictor's access to relevant information.
Prediction spans disciplines. Astronomy can predict Tides and Higgs boson decay with high precision using Physics laws. Weather forecasting uses Computational biology-like modeling of fluids and Forces (physics). Economics and social science predictions are notoriously fragile, hampered by Performativity (the act of predicting can change outcomes) and vast hidden variables. Perturbation theory helps when systems are nearly tractable; Autonomous systems trained on data make predictions with Neural networks, trading interpretability for flexibility.
The epistemology matters: a prediction differs from a guess, a hope, or a heuristic. Good predictions demand Verification, Appropriate numerical precision, and humility about uncertainty. Some systems are inherently unpredictable—see Wave-particle duality—while others simply exceed current computational capacity.
Prediction is ancient (Romans read entrails) and ultra-modern (machine learning), forever tempting us to believe the future is knowable.
