Elements (chemical)
Chemical elements are the fundamental materials of matter—pure substances made of identical atoms, each with the same number of protons. There are 118 known elements, ranging from mercury to hydrogen, organized in the Periodic table by their atomic properties.
Every element has a unique atomic number and symbol. Some, like carbon and oxygen, are essential to life; others are rare or radioactive. Elements combine through chemical bonding to form compounds—the vast diversity of substances we encounter daily.
